Remote Live Animation Over The Internet

More and more, using remote live animation makes sense as a way to cut some travel costs, save space and make another type of impression on the audience, who expects to find the "Man Behind the Curtain" nearby. Now, the performer can be anywhere in the world.

Pay No Attention to the Man on the Other Side

Libby & Dan on the setOf the World, that is. Recent innovations in our technology are now accommodating a scenario where we have one of our Digital Puppeteer systems on location at a tradeshow or special event, and control it from another one in our studio in Nevada, over the Internet.

The special pair of systems is connected by a combination of Skype webcam and microphone at the remote end (the tradeshow) and the wireless modem or WiFi connection between the two. When the systems are placed in remote mode, whatever the operator does with the character in the studio shows up at the remote site, including lip sync and facial expressions.

Streaming video is another way we accomplish this wizardry, using a "video streaming appliance" that creates an encoded video stream similar to webcasting methods. In this case, the actual size and quality of the video is dependant on the appliance as well as the speed of the Internet connection. In most cases, data rates of around 1.5 Mbps are sufficient, which means that just about any DSL or WiFi connection will work. Our remote location then establishes a second Internet connection which handles the Skype webcam and audio in both directions. The audio from this computer is directed to the speakers so that the audience can hear the character.
